about

Hi, and welcome...

Thanks to those people who have downloaded and also to those who have posted support for albums on my site. (Unfortunately I've lost some support postings from those albums that I've made new versions of ...never mind.)

I've been playing the guitar for many years, firstly as a classically trained youngster and from my late teens onward as a home recording artist/songwriter/free-form improviser ... taking a "my rules and no-one elses" approach. (Even by my own rules I sometimes wish I was a better singer). I muck about visual arts-wise now and again but not with the same persistence.

In Wellington NZ in the early 1990s I got myself a 4track cassette tape recorder and began recording songs and (a bit later) guitar improvisations.

The album 'SOME SONGS' compiles my early song based lathe-cut records of the early/mid 1990s.. the first things I actually released - albeit in tiny editions that mostly went to friends. Admittedly, copies of some of the releases that I felt "awkward" about sharing with the wider world, ended up binned.

'BRAMBLE' on the other hand, is a compilation of guitar improvs of the later 1990s all recorded in Dunedin. It was first released on the metonymic label as a CD in 2001. The albums MIRRORS & WINDOWS/VARIETY SHOW/DOMESTIC FLIGHTS also come recommended as "mid-period" examples of my guitar improvising.

"LANDS BEYOND" is my most recent song-based epic... being 4CDs in length and featuring a mixture of songs and guitar instrumentals.
Most of the tracks are without overdubs and contain a strong element of improvisation.

COLLABORATIONS:

A fortuitous event was meeting up with guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama in 2004. He was touring New Zealand at the time and the couple of hours we spent playing in my kitchen spawned the recording VINEGAR & RUM... which was released on the Boweavil label as both a CD and vinyl LP. If things go as planned we should be releasing something from our 2010 Christchurch get-together, on the End of the Alphabet label, sometime in 2017.

From around 2002 - 2005 I was part of an improv trio called "Three Forks". Tim Cornelius of the Sandoz Lab Technicians (percussion and various instruments) and James Currin of onetime Aussie band Crabstick, (cello and various instruments) made up the trio with Myself (guitar and various instruments). We released a 3" CD on Metonymic, a lathe-cut 10" record, and a CD called "THREE-LAYER-APE", released on Mr Currin's UFM - (united fairy moons) - label.
